Military robots generally conjure futuristic images. However, forms of automation have been used in warfare since ancient times. Current technological advances have made it possible for those fighting to be physically far removed from the site of action, relying on advanced sensors, high-speed processors, and remote-control equipment to perform the task of war. These advances have pulled in their wake additional social and moral discussions on their impact and use. Although these are important discussions, technological aspects are the book’s primary focus. The U.S. is currently at the forefront of this industry but is certainly not the only player, and the work explores what other countries are doing to further develop this field. The book starts with a brief background of military robots and delves into pertinent technological and operational issues. A chronology emphasizing events during and after the Cold War is followed by thumbnail biographies of individuals who contributed to developing and advancing military robots. The biographies include not only technical people but also major decision makers whose influence has directed growth in this area. The longest (and perhaps most insightful) chapter of this book describes some of the robots used by the military as well as documents pertaining to accepted use of this technology. Brief descriptions of relevant American organizations (government agencies, research organizations, and defense companies) are followed by a list of additional resources. This reviewer was struck by the amount of information that is publicly available, which raises the question of how much more is classified. Extensive references at the end of most chapters make this a valuable resource for those readers interested in greater study. As a reference for high-school students and up, this book is an excellent starting point for anyone interested in modern military robotics, especially on the technological capabilities of contemporary mechanization. --Muhammed Hassanali
